By Second Class Firefighter Dave Smiley Jr.
October 29, 2017

Beginning on Friday, October 27, the 2017 WCU Homecoming Weekend brought a busy few days for our members, including the following calls:

10/27

At 1507 hours, Stations 52, 53, Tower 54, and Ambulance 55 were alerted to a commercial building in the 200 block of Carter Drive for a reported coffee roaster on fire. Engine 53 arrived, reporting a one story commercial building with light smoke showing. Their crew then placed an 1.75" handline inservice, followed by Engine 52-2 (FF Smiley Jr.) who assumed second due engine responsibilities, securing a water supply and assisting with checking for extension. Minimal extension was found to the duct work and all units cleared in about 30 minutes. Engine 52-1 (FF Brogan) also responded on the assignment but was returned after staging.

At 2055 hours, Engine 52-2 (FF T. Crum), Engine 52-1 (FF Smiley Sr.), and Squad 52 (Capt. DiMeo) responded to an apartment building in the 100 block of East Market Street for the emergency elevator alarm. Crews arrived and extricated one person from an elevator before clearing in approximately 20 minutes.

10/28

At 0638 hours, Tanker 52 was alerted to respond to the unit block of Cottage Lane in Thornbury Township, Delaware County, for a fire alarm. Tanker 52 (FF Pierson) made the response but was returned prior to arrival.

At 0932 hours, Stations 54/56, 52, 4, DelCo 64, and DelCo RIT46 were alerted to a building in the 1500 block of West Chester Pike for the report of smoke in the building. Engine 52-2 (Lt. Creager) arrived as the second due engine, followed by Engine 52-1 (Lt. Davis) as the third. Crews located a small kitchen fire and made quick work of it before clearing. Air 52 (Capt. DiMeo) and Assistant 52 (Stafford) also made the response.

At 1159 hours, Stations 51, 52, 53, Tower 54, Ambulance 55, and QRS 58 were alerted to the 700 block of South Church Street for the reported commercial building fire. Engine 52-2 (Lt. Creager) arrived as the third due engine, and worked with crews from 51 and 53 to locate a small fire inside the building. The fire was quickly under control and the assignment was returned in about 30 minutes. Engine 52-1 (Capt. DiMeo), Air 52 (FF Brogan), and Assistant 52 (Stafford) also made the response.

At 1611 hours, Engine 52-1 (FF T. Crum) and Engine 52-2 (Lt. Rychlak) made the response to the 200 block of South Walnut Street for the fire alarm. Crews found the alarm was set off accidentally during a large party and cleared a short time later.

At 1946 hours, Engine 52-1 (Capt. DiMeo) responded to the 100 block of South High Street for the leaves on fire. The crew extinguished a small fire and returned a short time later.

Members also staffed the firehouse throughout the weekend and attended the WCU Rams Football game on Saturday, luckily none of the emergencies we responded to turned out to be large scale incidents.
